Website template vs custom website: an honest comparison
A template is the fastest way to get a website. A custom website is the fastest way to get a website that does what you need. The difference usually shows in the second year.
What you are actually buying
A template is a finished structure into which you put your texts and photos. The layout, behaviour and logic of the page are given and you bend them to fit. A custom website starts the other way round: first you decide what the page should do with a visitor, and the structure follows. The difference is in the order, not in how pretty it is.
In practice, with a template you always adapt the content to the form. You have five services, the template expects three. You want a price calculator, the template only has a form. Most businesses solve it by cutting what did not fit, and lose exactly the arguments that would have kept people on the page.
I do not want to demonise templates. I recommend them myself for projects where the goal is to get online quickly and test demand. The problem is using one where a business needs to stand out from twenty competitors with the same budget and the same list of services. Then the saving becomes a brake.
Price and time: where a template wins
A WordPress template or a ready made builder costs a few thousand crowns, depending on how much work you hand over. You can set it up yourself over a weekend. That is a real advantage, especially when you need a website now.
A custom website at Webify starts at CZK 19,990 and is ready within 7 days. That includes a structure designed for your field, texts built on arguments, a form with notifications and connected measurement. Larger scopes: Growth System from CZK 39,900 adds tracking and a lead database, Empire System from CZK 79,900 adds payments and more.
The time difference is smaller than people think. The idea that a custom website takes three months belongs to the days when designs were approved over weeks. When the materials are ready, the website is done within a week. What takes longest is what the client supplies: photos, prices and texts about the business.
- Free template: CZK 0, but dozens of hours of your time and no support
- Paid template set up for you: a few thousand crowns, done in days
- Custom website from CZK 19,990, done within 7 days of complete materials
- Growth System from CZK 39,900: website plus tracking and a lead database
- Empire System from CZK 79,900: payments, orders, more languages and systems
Standing out: why twenty businesses look the same
Popular templates are bought by thousands of people. In a single town that means three car services and two accounting firms with the same layout, the same icons and the same big photo with a button on the right. Customers do not remember you because there is nothing to remember.
What makes you different is not the graphics alone, but the order of information. For a guesthouse I put availability and direct booking on the first screen, because that is the whole fight against booking portal commissions. A hospitality template puts a gallery there because a gallery looks good in a demo.
The biggest difference shows where the owner is the brand: a tradesperson, a beautician, a lawyer, a trainer. A template turns them into an anonymous company. A custom website builds the page around a specific person, their work and the way they deal with people. That is usually what decides who the customer writes to.

The limits do not show immediately. They appear when you want something the template author did not expect: a second language, a different form behaviour, sending data to a CRM, a different price list structure. Each change means another plugin or a code edit that breaks with the next update.
- Speed: templates load scripts you do not need and pages get slow on mobile.
- Updates: an edit inside a template can disappear with the next update.
- Plugins: each one is a security risk and a brake.
- SEO: lots of unnecessary code and duplicate main headings.
- Measurement: connecting conversion tracking often requires editing the template.
- Handover: without documentation nobody finds their way around someone else's template quickly.
Security is the second big limit. A template with outdated plugins is the most common way foreign code gets into a small website. Cleaning a hacked site costs money and traffic, because Google can flag a page as harmful very quickly.
Real costs over three years
The price of a website is not the number on the invoice. It is the total over the time the website actually serves. With a template you add licences, plugins, updates and an hourly rate for every small change. With a custom website the entry price is higher, but running costs are flat. I always calculate it over three years, because that is how long a website usually lasts.
| Item | Template | Custom website |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase | A few thousand crowns | From CZK 19,990 |
| Licences and plugins | Yearly fees | None |
| Hosting, backups, security | Paid separately | CZK 990 a month (Upkeep) |
| Small edits | Hourly rate each time | Included in Care, CZK 2,990 a month |
| Hacking risk | Higher with plugins | Minimal for a static website |
The key rule: do not compare costs, compare results per crown. A website that brings two more enquiries a month pays for the difference within the first quarter. If one job is worth CZK 15,000 to you, a debate about a few thousand in purchase price is only a debate about when it pays back.
Verdict: how to decide in five minutes
A template is enough when you are testing an idea, have one service, sell through referrals and the website is just a business card. A custom website makes sense when the website should sell, when you compete in a crowded market or when you spend money on ads every month.
The most common mistake is choosing a template with the ambitions of a custom website. The business buys a ready look, spends three months squeezing functions into it and ends up paying more than if it had started from scratch. The opposite mistake is building a big custom website for a service nobody asks for yet.
If unsure, decide with one question: how much does one lost enquiry cost you? If a few hundred crowns, a template is plenty. If ten thousand or more, every month on a weaker website costs more than the price difference.
- Website only as a business card, very small budget: template
- Testing an idea, unsure if there is demand: template
- Paid advertising every month: custom website, otherwise you pay for weaker conversion
- Several services, a price list or calculator: custom website
- A field where people decide based on trust: custom website
- Need to be online tomorrow: template, with a plan to rebuild within six months

Can a template be rebuilt into a custom website later?
Yes, but texts and photos transfer more easily than structure. Usually the content stays and everything else is rebuilt, so you save only part of the template investment. If you expect to need more within a year, it is cheaper to start from scratch.
Is a WordPress template worse than a static website?
Not by principle, but it needs more maintenance. WordPress makes sense for a blog with many articles or where several people manage content. For a presentation website of up to ten pages it mainly adds updates, licences and risk. A static website is faster, cheaper to run and more secure.
How many pages does a CZK 19,990 custom website have?
Usually five to seven: home, services, prices or packages, references, about, contact and a landing page for ads. Scope follows content, not page count. Twelve services are solved with structure and filtering, not twelve pages nobody reads.
